Texas Savanna

My wife and I took a drive in the Texas Hill Country yesterday afternoon in hopes of seeing some Monarch butterflies on their annual migration. We did not see any Monarchs, but we were treated to some spectacular views with great afternoon lighting.

I know there are more trees in this scene than you would see on the savanna in Africa, but with all the golden grasses that's what it reminds me of from the photos I've seen of African savannas. Doeskin Ranch is part of the Balcones Canyonlands National Wildlife Refuge and one of my favorite places to go out and take in an afternoon hike. It's only about a 30 minute drive from our house and takes us away from the city to a place of true beauty in the Hill Country.

The trail in this scene makes me want to hop on it and see where it leads. The sun was setting and casting nice shadows and golden light across the landscape. The grasses were really picking it up nicely adding further to the surroundings.

If you ever find yourself in the Austin area, this little side trip is well worth the drive.
