Albino Lupine

My wife and I were walking the Brushy Creek Trail last night when she spotted these white lupine off the trail. We're guessing someone else did as well and placed this piece of wood by them for protection. We're so used to seeing our native bluebonnets, which there are PLENTY of in Brushy Creek Lake Park, that finding this oddity was a real jewel. I captured this hand held using live view on my NIkon D810 after several attempts. And as I was making the shots, my wife tells me not to step backward because there was a huge fireant mound directly behind me. I had been oblivious to the ants when I was positioning myself, but I sure was glad she noticed them. That would have been a rude awakening if I had stepped in them. All in all, for a handheld shot with a non-macro lens, I pretty pleased with how this shot came out.

Mountain Pink

It's Wildflower Wednesday and I saw these pretty blooms this past weekend. Handheld macro of some stunning mountain pink blooms in the Texas Hill Country.

Lone Star Blues

Happy Wildflower Wednesday! Although the bluebonnets are waning now, here's another shot of a group that I found along FM 1320 a few weeks ago. The blooms were at their peak and I guess someone decided they must need drink for all their hard work and tossed them a Lone Star (seen in the bottom left hand corner). I could have taken out the Lone Star, but I felt it was an integral part of the shot for multiple reasons, some good, some bad.

Musk Thistle

I saw this Musk Thistle a couple of weeks ago while taking photos on a bicycle tour. I just had to stop and try to capture it's beauty right before it bloomed. Judging by the web, a spider also seemed to think highly of the flower, but as a place to capture other insects stopping by. Nature is amazing!

A Walk in the Woods

Went for a hike in Doeskin Ranch after this weekend's rains. The wildflowers were popping and really made the hike. Lots of paintbrush with other flowers in the wings to begin blooming soon.

It was a great day for wildflowers on the shoulder of FM 2323 in the Texas Hill Country.

Roadside Paint Brush

Most springs along Texas Hill Country roadways, wildflowers can be found in abundance. Even though we are in the middle of a drought, this Spring has proven to be a very good one for our wildflowers.

Not many bluebonnets were blooming on this trip into the Hill Country, but the few patches I found were quite nice. I really liked how the granite wall looked behind this grouping of the state flower.

Got this shot east of Willow City on a lightly traveled dirt county road. The Longhorn was very patient with my photo taking.

The setting sun made for a nice shot of these bluebonnets in a field north of Leander.

Even in drought years there are spots of wildflowers in the Texas Hill Country. I spotted this patch on the Easter Hill Country Tour a few years ago. There was a lot of brown that year, so this little spot of blue was a welcome sight.

Takes me back to California!
