We saw these kayakers at the Lamplugh Glacier in Glacier Bay National Park. If I am ever able to go to Glacier Bay National Park again, kayaking the glaciers is definitely something I'd like to do. They refer to this glacier as Lampblue because of it's striking blue color. Seeing the kayaks in the shot really gives you a great idea of how immense these sheets of ice are. Sadly they are very small compared to what they were 150 years ago at the end of the 'Little Ice Age'.

Kayaker's Dream

Another shot I made on our Alaskan cruise in May of the kayakers at Lamplugh Glacier in Glacier Bay National Park. What I find intersting in this shot is the kayak partially hidden by the iceberg. If we only see 10% of the ice above the surface of the water, imagine how big that piece of ice must be.

Alaskan Cruising

Captured the Norwegian Pearl cruising out of Glacier Bay as we were cruising in on the Crown Princess. Wonder if Norwegian Cruise Lines needs a new photo to promote their Alaskan cruises? :-)

Margerie Glacier

Approaching Margerie Glacier from the Tarr Inlet at Glacier Bay National Park. Hard to believe that Tarr Inlet was once part of a glacier that dwarfed Margerie Glacier just over 100 years ago

Glacier Panorama

A panorama of Margerie Glacier in Glacier Bay National Park composed of 8 different wide angle shots stitched together. This glacier was so large it was impossible to encompass it all in one shot with the lense I was using. Ironic thing about it though is that to the right out of this shot is a HUGE open area that would have dwarfed Margerie Glacier and was occupied by the Grand Pacific Glacier only 150 years ago.

Ice Mountain

Margerie Glacier and the mountains that mark it's beginning. Per the info we were told by the naturalist on our cruise, I believe that is Mount Fairweather in the background. Mount Fairweather is the highest peak in Glacier Bay National Park and marks the border between the United States and Canada. From what I understand it can only be seen on fair weather days, hence it's name. Margerie Glacier is 21 miles long and 1 mile wide. This is only a small portion of the width of the glacier, but to know those mountains are over 21 miles away is pretty amazing.

Bittersweet Departure

As we prepared to head to our next Alaskan cruise destination, the Park Service comes to retrieve their coworkers that spent the day on the ship telling us about the various glaciers in Glacier Bay National Park. Seeing Glacier Bay was definitely on the bucket list of places I wanted to see. If I ever get the chance to go again, I hope to be able to spend more than a few short hours during the middle of the day.
