This century cactus was in bloom close to the entrance to the Window trailhead in the Chisos Basin campground while we were there last week. Unfortunately it was in a position that necessitated going into a campsite to get this angle for the image I wanted to capture and there was someone in that campsite. They left before we did on our last morning in the park and the late morning sun lit the blooms on the cactus quite nicely. I'm glad I got to see this in bloom. A beautiful temporary addition to a beautiful scene. Photo by Steve Coyle Photography (www.stevecoylephotography.com)
Sunrise last week on the road that descends from the Chisos Basin in Big Bend National Park. A front had moved through the day before and brought rain to the Chihuahuan Desert. The fog developed over night and as we drove down from the Chisos Basin to catch sunrise, we could see the fog starting to come up the roadway. Luckily the timing was perfect to catch the sun peaking on the lower mountains of the Chisos Basin in the direction of Panther Junction and the fog that had enveloped the desert floor. Being above the clouds like this in the desert was a unique experience that I had never seen in my previous visits to this remote area of Texas. This was the view of Casa Grande that greeted us before heading up to the Chisos Basin on our visit in May. The mountain was shrouded in clouds and gave it the feel of being in a scene from Jurassic Park. It almost felt as if we'd see a winged dinosaur soaring overhead. The clouds definitely made for some of the most interesting views I've ever had of the Chisos Mountains. I hope I'm lucky enough to see them like this again someday.
